Solar panels and energy are becoming ever more popular and encouraged as we face the current environmental issues. The Switch found that the UK has a combined capacity of 13.26 GW of solar PV power – enough to power around 3 million British households. According to the The Solar Trade Association, around 900,000 British homes have solar PV panels installed. At Adexsi, we are proud to be contributing to the solar initiative, and the demonstrator project is an opportunity to add a number of houses to that 900,000, with it being a complex.
The demonstrator project involves a team of experts exploring the mainstream use of home-grown timber in the construction sector. The next phase of the demonstrator project which will see the first two-storey modular home manufactured from Scottish mass timber displayed during COP26 is about to commence. The Transforming Timber initiative – led by Construction Scotland Innovation Centre (CSIC) with support from Edinburgh Napier University, ECOSystems Technologies, the University of Edinburgh, and SNRG – is creating a fully functional prototype that focuses on the business case for using Scottish timber resources in future building projects.
The success of the demonstrator project and prototype unit is likely to lead to the development of the UK’s first mass-manufacturing facility for home-grown natural resources.
SNRG have focused on design quality to achieve a simple aesthetic, as a blank canvas for residents to express their personality.
Best use of space is ensured with 2.5m high ceilings and open plan layout on the lower floor, sharing daylight from large windows (clear window areas in excess of 20% of wall area) and stairwell roof lights. Finishes emphasise simplicity with exposed CLT.
A central service ‘pod’ comprises; kitchen, shower room, staircase, storage, lighting, heating, ventilation and cooling.
Bedrooms have equal provision, with full height windows onto the day-lit stairwell and deep window bench for relaxed views of the community’s shared garden.
Mediating between apartment and access deck is a terrace, bounded by a light well and a timber planter.
For the demonstrator project, one of the complexes main features and selling point is the abundance of solar panels, which cover the roof in a visually appealing, modern, sleek and eco-friendly way. The duplex is designed as a terraced building within the full courtyard. The design quality aims to achieve a simple aesthetic, as a blank canvas for residents to express their personality, so the best use of space is ensured with 2.5m high ceilings and open plan layout on the lower floor, sharing daylight from large windows and stairwell roof lights. The rooms that include a skylight are: the staircase, landing and shower room.
