Bishop of Winchester Academy

Client: Balfour Beatty Construction

Location: Bournemouth

Overview:

Since converting to academy status in 2010, the Bishop of Westminster Academy has been a big success, attracting secondary school pupils from Bournemouth and surrounding areas. With increasing demand came the need to develop a sixth form, enabling pupils to continue the final two years of their education at the academy. New blocks, constructed by Balfour Beatty Construction, take the school to a new head count of 1250, including 200 sixth form pupils. Balfour Beatty called on Adexsi to design, manufacture and install a combined smoke and natural ventilation system to suit the needs of the new building’s interior. There was one small challenge – a four week timescale for completion of the works.

Outcome:

Adexsi developed bespoke aluminium penthouse units to sit on the rooftop and provide a visually satisfactory solution. These were fitted with Certilam facade louvre units, providing a combined solution for natural and smoke ventilation. These units are fully certified to BSEN 12101-2 as required by the project specification. An advanced control system was also installed, allowing the natural ventilation to be modified depending on time of day, internal temperature, levels of carbon dioxide in the building, and taking account of external environmental issues such as wind and rain. In the event of fire, the units have an override facility so they immediately switch over to operate as a smoke ventilation system.
